VirtueMart and ItemID

If you are going to get your VirtueMart based website ranked in the Search Engines, the most important thing you do is getting a lock on the fluctuating Item ID. To get the Item ID to stabilize, you need to do the following in the administration of Joomla.

Chose Menu -> Menu Manager

Create a new menu by pressing the “New” folder on the top right just before “Help”
Give the menu a name like products, store (or whatever suits you).

Save the menu

In Menu open the newly created menu that is empty.

Choose “New” and Choose Component on the next screen.

In Add Menu Item :: Component give the element a name like shop or product.
Choose VirtueMart as the component to tie to the new menu object.
Choose Save

The next thing you need to do is to publish the newly created module that is the result of what we just created.

Choose Modules and find the mod_main menu object we just created that is not yet published.

On the page Site Module: Edit [ products ] set Published to “Yes”

Set Pages / Items -> Menu Item Link(s): to None (Very important!)

Choose Save

You are now done, and the Item Id will stop jumping around, and the bots of the Search Engines will see that the pages of your shop finally has the same addresses every time they visit the pages.

After a little while, you will see that Google starts caching your shop-pages (finally) and you are ready to start on the long  journey to the top of the Search Engines (of course we can help you shorten that journey by building links to your pages).

    Great tip. I am helping a friend setup his online store using Joomla/VirtueMart and will have to check on the ItemID settings.

    It works without menu module creation, just a published menu Item that points to Virtuemart. Menu module is not created if you leave “Module title” field empty while creating new menu item.
