As a financial advisor, you understand how to work a local market.  Most likely, you have strong networking skills and know how to handle a variety of interpersonal situations effectively in order to maintain your reputation and gain new clients.

However, with the growing trend of people searching online first for everything, search engine optimization is quickly becoming almost essential to the survival of any business, online or offline.

Why is SEO Important?

Marketing yourself offline is costly and time-consuming.  Prepping all the materials involves hours of monotonous and repetitive tasks.  And, you never know what your return on investment will be.

With search engine optimization, however, you simply pay for a service, and if you are working with a company worth its salt, they can help you produce a substantial return on investment.

While real-world word-of-mouth will help your business grow, people are increasingly heading online to learn about local businesses and professionals first.  Soon, it will be the first place just about all people go to learn about the services they need.

How do You, as a Financial Advisor, choose an SEO Company to Work With?

There are an almost infinite number of ways SEO would work for a financial advisor.  Every company would make different recommendations.  Interestingly, even though recommendations are different, they can all be very effective in helping you grow your business online.

The deciding factors for a financial advisor would be:

  • Can you afford the services of the company you are talking with?
  • Do you trust they have your best interests in mind?

SEO services have a wide range of cost, ranging anywhere from $25 per hour to $1000 per hour.  And, just because you pay much more per hour doesn’t mean that you will receive the results you are seeking.

In the end, it’s all about trust.  If you have someone trying to pressure you into a decision you don’t want to make, they are probably after your money and don’t have your best interests in mind.  Unfortunately, this is the case with many internet marketing companies.

Other companies don’t even have you sign a contract.  They do this so you don’t feel like you are trapped – you can leave just about any time you want.

Questions You can Ask a Search Engine Optimization Firm

Finding a good internet marketing firm is a lot like finding a good contractor.  Many firms are small (1-5 people) and do not have a large national reputation built up.  Here are some questions you can ask your firm in order to see how trustworthy they are:

  • What results have you produced for other companies? (Keep in mind companies often prefer to remain confidential, so an SEO may be able to talk about results, but not names)
  • How long have you been in business? (The industry has been around since the mid-to-late 1990s.  Anyone with more than 5 years in the industry has been in the game a pretty long time).
  • How many clients do you have now?
  • Where are you located?
  • Do you have contracts?
  • How do I cancel services if I am unhappy?
  • What reporting do you provide?

If you ask these questions and receive sensible answers, then you are probably talking with a trustworthy firm.  Get ready for your business to take off!
